Sue Cavanaugh!

Ori-Kume #20 - 41 x 52

Sue Cavanaugh, who is scheduled to teach at Art Quilt Tahoe this Fall, had a piece accepted in Quilt National 2011 and it was awarded the Lynn Goodwin Borgman Award for Surface Design. Congratulations Sue! This award was given to Sue for the second time, which has never happened! Juror Nelda Warkentin wrote in the exhibition catalog…”Only with fiber and thread can one achieve the look seen in Ori-Kume #20. …The tension between the left and right shapes is created by the artist’s masterful use of texture and a limited palette of dark markings on light fabric. The texture, markings and images give this work a strong presence.”

Sue will be teaching the Shibori stitches used to create this award-winning piece, as well as other stitch and binding Shibori techniques in her workshop which is detailed on our site and more images of her work can be found in our Gallery. Sign-up soon to be part of this special workshop!!

2011 Scholarship Winner Wendy Clem

We are very pleased to announce that Wendy Clem of Carson City, Nevada was selected by our instructor panel, as our 2011 Ina Stentiford Memorial Scholarship winner. Wendy, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1992, needed something to distract herself from her chemo and radiation treatments, so she took up traditional quilting. A few years later she purchased a magazine that had an article in it by Velda Newman and she was so inspired, she completely changed directions and taught herself how to create art quilts. The Koi quilt shown above is one of her inspired pieces and, of course, she’ll be taking Velda Newman’s workshop in November! Congratulations Wendy!

Should you know of anyone that would like to apply for a scholarship to attend Art Quilt Tahoe in 2012, please refer them to our website for more information.

Great Fun at 1st PDQ at AQT Challenge

Congratulations to Susan Shie’s PDQ Challenge Team, lead by Katie Fowler, for winning the first PDQ at AQT Challenge. It was great fun to watch 7 teams create a 12×12 block in one hour, using pre-selected fabrics, while others cheered from the sidelines…some because they weren’t the one under fire to complete the block, and others just to cheer on their teammate!

We’re Here!

We arrived at Lake Tahoe yesterday afternoon and settled into our very quaint cabin on the lake. One student arrived on Friday from Alaska, and three more arrived today! Why is it that the Alaska people beat the storm and the rest of our students will drive through it today to get here? The good news is that we see stars this morning…but the wind is something else.
As you can see from the photo, Patty Hawkins and Susan Shie also arrived last night. Patty’s entire presentation for tonight was all prepared on her new Apple IPad…we all want one so that we can retire our old slide carousels and overhead projectors! Keep checking back for news about this year’s conference as we will be blogging daily!

2011 Art Quilt Tahoe Faculty – Rosalie Dace

We are pleased to announce that Rosalie Dace of South Africa will be one of our teachers at Art Quilt Tahoe next year. Rosalie, whose work reflects her passion for color, pattern and texture, believes that a quilt should say something about its time and place in history. Rosalie began her teaching career in South Africa teaching Art and English at a high school in Pietermaritzburg, and later taught in Grahamstown at the Johann Carinus Art Centre, the Grahamstown Technical College, and Rhodes University. She has been teaching quiltmaking and embroidery in South Africa since 1983. Her work, including Best of Show at the South African National Quilt Festival in 1988 and 1998, is found in private collections and in the Durban Art Gallery, and has appeared in national magazines, including the Fall 2006 issue of Quilting ArtsMagazine. You will be able to sign-up online for Rosalie’s workshop after November 15, 2010.
