Kevin Womack

Based in the rolling hills of Lynchburg, Virginia, Kevin Womack is a textile artist whose work weaves together memory, tradition, and innovation. He began his journey into quilting in 1986, guided by the hands of his maternal grandmother, who revealed the power of fabric and stitch. Drawn to the rich history held in every scrap of cloth, Kevin discovered a lifelong passion for exploring the expressive language of pattern, color, and texture.

Over the years, his devotion to fiber art deepened, leading to a love of hand-dyeing and surface design. He transforms plain fabric into vibrant works that balance quiet reflection with visual energy. Through bold color, layered patterns, and subtle textures, he intertwines abstraction, storytelling, and the tactile beauty of cloth, inviting viewers to connect with the personal and collective histories embedded in each piece.

Kevin has exhibited his quilts widely in regional and national venues, including Quilt National, Quilt Visions, and the Virginia Quilt Museum. His artistry has earned numerous accolades, including Best in Show at Quilts=Art=Quilts 2021 at the Schweinfurth Art Center and the Award of Excellence at Form, Not Function at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in 2023.

A dedicated educator and speaker, Kevin teaches and lectures across the country, sharing his passion for fiber, design, and the enduring power of cloth and story.

Workshop: The Thread’s the Thing – The Impact of Thread Color on Quilted Surfaces

There are countless ways to quilt a contemporary quilt, and the quilting itself can transform your work. While the pattern often sets the stage, the color of your thread and the density of your stitching can dramatically change the final effect. In this class, you’ll explore essential color concepts through free motion quilting exercises and learn how color theory can bring your designs to life. You’ll experiment with a variety of theory-based color combinations before moving on to expressively “draw” with your sewing machine. Through hands-on practice, you’ll see how thread color, stitch, and pattern combine to create dynamic surfaces and surprising results—revealing that thread color isn’t just a finishing touch but an expressive element of subtle power to add to your artistic arsenal.
