Supply List

Threads – Bring a minimum of 20 spools, up to 60 spools if possible. Include:

  • A wide variety of cotton and/or polyester 50 wt. and/or 40 wt. threads in SOLID colors (no variegated).
  • A range of warm and cool colors.
  • Light, medium, and dark values.
  • At least one of all 12 pure colors on the color wheel.
  • Black, white, and gray.

Bobbins

  • Mostly you will use either white or black bobbin thread.
  • Bring a few extra bobbins for color changes.
  • We will have time to wind bobbins in class.

Needles

  • Organ or Madeira brand Anti-Glue needles are preferred.

Sewing Machine (Important – Oil your machine and ensure it is working properly before class.)

  • Ensure it is a machine you can operate in free-motion style.
  • Power cord and foot pedal.
  • Free-motion or darning foot.
  • Your machine manual (in case of trouble).
  • A sewing machine extension table (highly recommended).
  • An extension cord or power strip.

Tools & Basic Supplies

  • Basic sewing kit: scissors, pins, seam ripper, extra needles, bobbins, etc.
  • Rotary cutter.
  • Cutting mat (at least 18” × 24”).
  • Square ruler (at least 3”, up to 6.5”).
  • Iron and ironing surface (if not provided by the venue).

Adhesives (Choose your preferred method – see Optional & Pre-Class Preparation notes below.)

  • A fusible product (e.g., Misty Fuse) and Goddess Sheet or parchment paper, OR
  • Fabric basting spray, OR
  • Two new glue sticks.

Fabric & Sketching Supplies

  • Sketchbook and pens/pencils/markers.
  • 3–4 fat quarters in solid colors (or fabrics that read as solid) that you like.
  • At least 20 fabric rectangles (3” × 18”), all different solid colors or reads-as-solids (may be backed with fusible before class if desired).

Prepared Sandwiches (See Pre-Class Preparation section below.)

Optional Items

  • Small color wheel (available for purchase in class for $5).
  • A small quilt sandwich you are ready to quilt (max size 60” × 60”).
  • Two new glue sticks (if not fusing or spraying).
  • Air-erasable or water-erasable fabric marker.
  • Walking foot (optional). A zig-zag foot (optional) – bring the proper needle plate.
  • Portable table lamp (e.g., Ott Light).
  • 24” rotary cutting ruler, at least 3” wide.

Pre-Class Preparation

Fabric & Batting:

  • 2 yards black fabric and 2 yards white fabric, cut into fat quarters (18” × 22”).
  • 8 pieces of batting, 18” × 22” (your preferred loft and content).

Sandwiches: (In class, you will be adding smaller fabric pieces to these sandwiches using your chosen adhesive method. Please plan accordingly.)

  • Lightly spray baste (or fuse) 4 sandwiches with white on one side and black on the other.
  • Bring the remaining fabric and batting, along with your adhesive (fusible, spray baste, or glue sticks) to prepare additional sandwiches in class.

Note: You will have the option to begin quilting a small to medium-sized work (up to 60” × 60”) during the last two days of class. If you prefer to continue exploring color and stitch on samples instead:

  • Bring an additional yard each of black and white fabric (total 3 yards each).
  • Cut a total of 12 batting pieces (18” × 22”).
  • Prepare 4 more sandwiches before class, and bring extra fabric and batting for flexibility.
  • Bring a few more solid-color fat quarters.
