FABRIC

  • 5 yards of white pfd cotton cloth. PFD cloth is prepared for dyeing, and can be purchased at DharmaTrading.com or e-quilter.com. Cotton broadcloth or print cloth is fine. A linen weave will not be effective for some of our techniques. Smoother fabrics are preferable. Carol will email about fabric preparation (soda- soaking) ahead of class.
  • Optional: 1 yard of smooth silk, or a couple china silk scarf blanks
  • Optional: Sheer silk organza, 1 or 2 yards

ART/ OFFICE SUPPLIES

  • notebook and pen
  • Sketchbook about 9 x 12 that will withstand wet media (eg ink, paint, markers, etc.) An example is the Canson XL Mixed Media, but the brand is not important.
  • stapler and staples
  • Markers and pens of all sizes and types that you have. A variety of tip sizes is helpful. Color is not important. All black is fine.
  • Pins, for pinning work to wall
  • scissors to cut paper and plastic
  • small pair scissors or snips
  • Exacto knife and small self-healing mat (about 9×12)
  • Silkscreens: at least 2 blank screens, 12 x 16” These are small enough to fit inside a suitcase. Carol will send Amazon links to these ahead of class.
  • A variety of cheap brushes from fine to wide. Chip brushes are good.
  • 25.TEXTSupplies-AQT
  • Hard rubber brayer
  • masking tape in 1” and 2” widths— Bring regular tan tape, not the low-tack blue tape
  • Optional: Gelli plate, any size. Carol will have some available for students to try out.

DYE SUPPLIES

  • old clothes or a paint smock to wear
  • rubber gloves–both the thin nitrile or latex ones from the pharmacy, and the heavier dishwashing kind
  • 6-10 cups for dye mixing (8 oz)
  • 2 larger containers for rinsing brushes
  • 6-8 plastic picnic spoons for stirring
  • A collection of mark making objects from around the house: chopsticks, plastic fork, sponges, daubers, plastic door key, sturdy feather…. Limit yourself to one ziplock bag!
  • two 5 gallon buckets–if you are driving
  • 1 plastic drop cloth, at least 2 mil in thickness

INSPIRATION

  • Inspirational quotes that have meaning for you. Just a few favorite poems, journal writings, sayings. Nothing too long…a sentence to a paragraph
  • Inspirational photos that reference text, or marks that you love in nature, on objects. These can be a physical collection of a digital collection. They do not have to be printed out. They could be on a Pinterest board, for example, or in an album of your own photos on your phone or tablet.

A supply fee ($50) includes Procion MX dyes and auxiliaries, fabric paints and inks, stencils, thermofax screens and tools for student use.
