MATERIALS LIST
- 2–3 photos of works of art that you like: painting, print, photography, drawing or sculpture… it’s up to you. Be inspired by shapes, colors, structure, or the feeling you get when looking at the artwork. I have supplied examples of Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) if you would like to use them. Please have letter size color hard copies of the images you like best — a standard laser print of each is fine.
- 8-10 fabrics, in a range of values, patterns, and textures. Half yards to full yards work great for this project. Fabrics that read as a solid are easier to work with than strong patterns. Bring at least one solid dark fabric, and one solid white or off-white. You will select a few fabrics to use, but you will want a range to choose from. You do not need to match the colors of your artwork, but feel free to be inspired by the colors you see. Bring 2 yards of fabric that can be used as a backing, if you’d like to finish a small quilt.
- Standard cotton quilt batting, about 24″ x 36″. I like 80/20 cotton/poly batting. Tape this up so you can experiment with your composition, and step back to see the results. Have your phone/camera handy to take pictures of your progress! You can also use this batting for finishing a small wall quilt.
- Cotton sewing thread for piecing in a neutral color, like medium grey. I prefer 50 wt. thread. Please also bring white (or cream), black, and a few color options for thread. We will have time to do some quilting.
- OPTIONAL: #8 perle cotton and an embroidery needle for big stitch hand quilting.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT
- Domestic sewing machine with quarter-inch seam allowance foot (or standard foot), and a walking foot (or dual feed foot) if you plan to try machine quilting during the workshop.
- Fresh machine sewing needle: 80/12

- Seam ripper
- Cutting mat (a larger size is nice; I like 24 x 36)
