Patty Hawkins

Patty lives in Estes Park , Colorado , making art quilts in the wonderful studio created by husband Wes, both shared joint exhibitions in 2005 and 2007. They have three very creative, grown children; a loving springer, Mandy, and a stinker cat, Marigold.
Honors include Colorado’s Larimer county 2008 Visual Artist; the 2007 Quilt Japan Prize awarded at Quilt Visions 2006 (which in turn gifted a teaching trip to Japan ); 2005 Rocky Mountain National Park Artist Residency; exhibiting in juried shows, including the most respected Quilt National ‘07 and Quilt Visions ‘06 and ‘08.
The privilege of being an artist gives opportunity to share this creativity, teaching at many venues; Quilt Surface Design Symposium, Art Quilt Tahoe, Quilting By the Lake ; East Bay Heritage Quilters ( California ); North Suburban Needlearts Quild ( Chicago ); and many Colorado venues. 20 years quilting follows 15 years working in watercolor. Patty grew up in Louisiana , but considers herself a true westerner, loving the open spaces, hiking in the mountains and fantastic climate.
Workshop: Take A Concept! Collage It!
All Levels of student
Collage offers a ROAD MAP to CREATE and TEST design ideas in small CLOTH & PAPER projects; by tearing, altering, layering & fusing and/or glueing; while exploring colors, values, shapes & visual textures. We will play, stepping away from our individual comfort zone of working in fabric;THROW ANGST out the window!
Collage is trial and error composing, with no expectations, for fun and exploration. Small exploratory studies will lead us to fabric quilts.
Look for DESIGN IDEAS, in our own visual journals of art clipping inspirations; and sketchbooks; plus what we observe in our surroundings. Examples shown of studio art quiltmakers, showing their work in series, to emphasize creating art work in series.
Discussion time given each student, about (her/his) recent work.
Henri Matisse said his “cutting process is like drawing with scissors”.
“Collage helps work with gutsy colors when getting too predictable, and to simplify busy areas”, says AWS watercolor artist, Carole Barnes.
Collage Exercises to explore various mediums (paper, felt, cloth, sheers, netting & marker tools)
- find composition ideas via “cut out” windows & magazine pages
- create added values & visual textures, with net overlays, tissue papers, colored pencils and/or oil pastels
- focus on Design Elements as great tools & find clues to individual, unique, personal ways to create our art work
- consider alternate techniques to continue with a design concept
- listen to “your” intuition – simplify & create “your” unique image
- work shorter time by composing larger images in compositions
Various edge finishes explored: bindings or not; heavy zig zag finished edges; fused edges; my favorite finish to cover the fabric composition with tull to protect raw edges, later adding the top layer of stitchery. (I don’t Wonder Under my fabrics, prefer to use “band-aid” strips of fusible web under fabric collage shapes, allowing more “loft” to the finished piece.) Various batt foundations explored, to experience the “loft” seen when final stitchery is added.
No fee assessment for supplies I’ll bring for “playing” to compliment the supply list.
