Jane Dunnewold

Jane Dunnewold teaches and lectures internationally, and has mounted numerous solo exhibitions, including Inspired by the Masters (Texas Quilt Museum (2018) and the National Quilt Museum in 2019. A second mixed media series featuring re-purposed quilt blocks and gold leaf was exhibited at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas (2017) and at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL.

Her work won Best of Show in the exhibition Timeless Meditations (Tubac Art Center/2013). She is a recipient of the Quilt Japan Prize, and Gold Prize at the Taegue (Korea) International Textile Exhibition. The San Antonio Art League named Dunnewold Artist of the Year for 2019. In 2020 her archives were acquired by the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 2022 her work was featured in the prestigious QuiltFolk magazine.

Workshop: Backgrounds and Textures – Mixed Media for Quilters

In this workshop we’ll explore a range of exciting possibilities, using simple tools and colorants. I will demonstrate each process in detail, sharing tips, best practice approaches to techniques that will expand your ability to create distinctive fabrics and backgrounds for your quilts.

Techniques will include:

  • Carving eraser stamps
  • Stamps and texture plates made with glue, spackle, masking tape, and caulk
  • India ink dyeing and resisting
  • Maximizing the gel plate
  • Bubble textures
  • Surprising texture from veggie bags, tomato netting and window screen
  • Reinventing flour paste resist

Come prepared to have some fun. The only prerequisite is an open mind to the possibilities.
